SHOTS Activities including Daily Schedules

A major goal of the SHOTS program is to Enhance critical thinking and laboratory skills in science and mathematics.

Course: Students will participate in advanced-level Genetics, Chemistry and Mathematics courses. Materials presented in the courses will be equivalent to a college level course in both quality and sophistication. The instruction will be rigorous and intensive, simulating that of an undergraduate-level science course.

Experimental and project based laboratory exercises will be provided for students to learn a variety of hands-on and technical skills covered in lectures, readings, and classroom discussions. Inquiry-based laboratory work will encourage the development of important skills such as detailed observation, accurate recording, experimental design, manual manipulation, data interpretation, statistical analysis, and operation of technical equipment.

Research Projects: Students will be engaged in inquiry-based laboratory experiences designed to challenge students to perform experiments drawn from some of the more important areas within molecular genetics such as the molecular basis of breast cancer, hypertension, diabetes and other health related diseases. The laboratories are intended to challenge students' abilities to understand problems, develop and implement appropriate experimental designs, manipulate data, draw conclusions, think analytically, develop hypotheses, and enhance written and oral communication skills.

Evening Chemistry and Mathematics Tutorials: Chemistry and mathematics concepts will be reinforced during evening tutorial sessions.
